Sep Blatter Visit
FIFA President Sep Blatter completed his four day visit to South Africa at Soccer City stadium on 17 September 2008. He gave an encouraging assessment of the preparations thus far for 2010. “I am very pleased with what I have seen over the last few days, in particular the stadiums. The progress being made is good. With all the guarantees and assurances given by the political and sports authorities, I am convinced, that together we can make the FIFA World Cup a great success.”
“We want to walk away from this World Cup as a single South Africa,” stated a patriotic Danny Jordaan during the visit by German Chancellor Angel Merkel to the stadium in October 2007. Jordaan also added that nation-building is part of the Local Organising Committee’s (LOC) strategy to ensure a successful 2010.
1 Million hours for Safety
A multitude of brightly coloured hard-hats and safety-slogan t-shirts festooned the pitch of one of the most impressive stadiums being built on African soil. Soccer City played host to an electrifying event that rivalled that of the festivities seen when construction began in 2007. The hard hats were worn by no less than 2400 construction workers who jubilantly celebrated Soccer City’s goal of striving towards 1 million disabling injury-free man-hours before its completion in 2009.
